Radon is a radioactive gas that can cause cancer. Radon is caused by the breakdown of uranium in the soil, rock, and water underneath the ground. As radon gas breaks down short-lived particles called alpha particles are produced, and it is believed that these particles are what is especially dangerous to us.
We are unable to detect radon with any of our senses from visual to smell, but you may be breathing in high levels of radon. In the United States, radon is the second primary cause of lung cancer and is estimated to cause more than 20,000 cancer-related deaths a year. All homes can have elevated levels of radon, but Greenville and Spartanburg counties specifically have a very high risk of encountering elevated radon levels.
Should You Test for Radon?
Testing is the only method to determine how much radon is in your home. There are no symptoms that will occur from exposure immediately. It typically takes many years before any problems arise from exposure to radon. Many organizations including The Surgeon General, The Environmental Protection Agency, American Lung Association, and American Medical Association, recommend having your home tested for radon due to the consequences it has on your health.
Anything at or above 4 pCi/L is considered too high and a radon mitigation system should be installed to reduce radon in your home. If your home has less then 4 pCi/L you may still want to consider a radon mitigation system. Any amount of exposure can still potentially cause cancer although the chances are less.
