Stairways are very commonplace in today’s homes and businesses. Ranging from elaborate, regal staircases with dozens of steps to the humble stoop with perhaps only one or two steps, stairways lift us up and let us down on a daily basis. The fact that they’re so common is, in itself, the reason behind why they can be a safety hazard, since they’re easy to take for granted. So what are some things you can do to keep stairways from becoming a hazard?
Keep stairways maintained. Never use stairs for storage, even temporarily. Make sure all of the steps are level and equal in height, with sufficient traction on each step. In the event of a rain or snow storm, it’s important to ensure that the stairs are cleared of debris or snow.
Use stairways properly. Even well-cleared stairways can be dangerous if used improperly. Use the handrails. Take only one step at a time. Pay attention to what you’re doing.
