A lot of people have war stories about injuries they sustained as small children on a playground. These injuries range from the pain that comes from the searing heat of a metal slide in the summer sun to a gashed knee landing the wrong way on a hidden rock near the swings. While playground equipment has gotten a lot safer over the years, there’s still plenty of potential for injury. As a loving parent or grandparent, you likely don’t want the little ones in your life to have to tell these war stories in their future.
For that reason, it’s important to periodically inspect the condition of all playground equipment on your property. How is the ground around the playground? Has the sand, mulch, or other soft ground cover run off, exposing rocks or sharp objects? Are swings at least 24 inches apart from each other? Has there been any warping on the wood or metal that exposed sharp edges, pinch points, or loose hardware?
