Identifying Power Draw

It’s around this time of year that some homeowners begin to detect something that can range from annoying to extremely expensive – power draw. This is partially a good time to identify power draw because during the springtime, as temperatures are relatively nice, there is little need for air conditioning or heating. So, homeowners may notice an exceedingly expensive energy bill and wonder why it’s so high if they haven’t been using their HVAC system. When this happens, the next step is to try and find the culprit that’s drawing so much power.

For a professional home inspector with thermal imaging in their arsenal, this is a fairly simple procedure. They’ll start at the circuit breaker in your home, and the thermal imaging camera will quickly detect which circuit is running the hottest. Then, you can turn off all the circuits except the hottest, and then turn off any appliances that are left on one by one until the culprit is found.
