Surge protectors are an increasingly important part of every home. Power surges and spikes can happen at any time and for a wide variety of reasons. While many people think that lightning strikes are the only thing that causes power surges, the fact is that even the simple act of an older or higher-voltage appliance like a refrigerator turning on can cause surges. Those power surges can do serious damage to other electronic devices connected to the same circuit.
You can get surge protection for your entire house, but in most cases, you’ll need to have a licensed electrician install it for you. Most homeowners opt for standalone surge protectors, even when they already have whole-home surge protection.
One more thing! A lot of people are under the false assumption that all power strips are surge protectors. They’re not! While many power strips do offer surge protection features, not all of them do. But, let’s discuss power strips in our next post.
