A long time ago, in a galaxy not so far away, the word “smart” was almost exclusively reserved for defining the intelligence of a human being. Now that we’re living in a strange, science fiction future, though, the word “smart” is used to define the capability that an appliance has to connect to the internet and perform functions on its’ own. From smart refrigerators to smart bulbs to smart outlets to smart toasters, it seems like every appliance you can buy nowadays has a “smart” option. With all of these connected devices, is there any potential danger?
In short, yes. In some respects, any device that can connect to the internet has the potential to be controlled by someone else. For that reason, it’s important to know about any settings available that can block that access or otherwise keep your smart home device private and secure. In addition, be sure to only invest in smart home products that come from a reputable brand.
