Plumbing issues are not easy or cheap to fix. There are some big dos and don’ts when it comes to your plumbing.
Watch what goes down your sink drain. Before washing dishes or putting them in the dishwasher, scrape off large food chunks. Be sure to use a good sink strainer basket to catch any remaining small food remnants. These can be easily found online or in stores. Silicone and stainless steel are both good, but the stainless steel ones will probably last longer.
Use a paper towel to wipe off the remaining grease from plates and pots and pans. This is especially important with bacon grease or cooking oils, like coconut oil. In their liquid form, they may seem like they can easily be washed down the drain, but when cooled, they solidify and can cause serious clogs in your septic system. If it’s a large amount of grease, allow it to cool and then scrape it into the trash. Other foods like uncooked rice, cooked pasta, and flour can also clog up your drain. Be sure to dispose of these in the trash. Coffee grounds are also drain-clogging culprits.
